Becoming a BII mentor
The BII is the professional body for the Licensed Retail Sector. It has around 13500 members mainly in England, Scotland and Wales. Its regional network is made up of 16 regions each with its own Chairman and Council. Its members come from a variety of industries but predominantly the ‘on trade’.
An important part of our remit is to provide relevant and timely resources and assistance to those who are entering the trade. This includes up to the minute information and guidance to ensure new entrants have as much help at the outset of their careers as possible.
The mentoring scheme is an integral part of this assistance and originates from discussions we have had with new and existing members. It is a good opportunity for senior professionals within the trade to share their invaluable knowledge with those just starting out on their career.
The Role of a Mentor
A mentor is defined as ‘an experienced and trusted advisor’. It is a crucial role and one which will help to ensure that we provide as comprehensive a package to new members of BII – when they need it most.
The role of mentor will be fulfilled by volunteer Fellows (FBII) and Companions (CBII). Those accepted onto the scheme will be added to the BII Mentor Register which will be updated from time to time.
As new Foundation members join BII membership they will be offered the opportunity to be allocated a mentor from the BII Mentor Register. It is expected that discussions will be via the telephone and/or email as this is a voluntary role and no expenses will be reimbursed by BII. It is entirely at the discretion of the mentor how much time they spend with the Foundation member but we would expect this to be at least an hour (in one or two sessions) and then on an ‘as and when’ basis.
